A mechanical seal uses two very flat faces to seal around a rotating shaft. The faces, elastomer, spring style, and seat design all work together. The factory seal may have been sized for clean water or a specific fluid. If the fluid, temperature, chemical exposure, or duty cycle has changed, a different material combination may perform better.

Mechanical seal material choice usually comes down to the face combination and the elastomer. The factory seal may be fine for clean water, but a better material may be needed for chemicals, hot water, wastewater, abrasive fluid, or dry running risk.

A lip seal uses a flexible sealing lip that rides on a shaft to keep lubricant in or contamination out. The lip material, case style, garter spring, and whether it is a single or double lip all affect how well it performs. If the fluid, temperature, shaft speed, or environment has changed since the equipment was new, a different lip material may be worth considering.
Lip material should match the fluid being sealed, the temperature range, shaft speed, and the environment around the equipment.

Packing is braided sealing material compressed around a shaft or stem to control leakage. It is widely used in pumps, valves, agitators, and other rotating or reciprocating equipment. Packing choice depends heavily on the fluid, pressure, temperature, shaft speed, and whether it is a pump or valve application.
Different packing materials are suited to different service conditions. Choosing based on only one factor such as the fluid may not be enough.
Shaft diameter, stuffing box bore, cross-section size, number of rings currently in the box, fluid, pressure, temperature, RPM, photos, and any information from the old packing or equipment nameplate all help.

A bearing isolator protects bearings by helping keep contamination out and lubricant in.
